Amazon: The Mystique of Surgery and the Surgeons Who Perform Them - Dr. David Gelber

Behind the Mask: The Mystique of Surgery and the Surgeons Who Perform Them takes the reader on a journey through the mind of a surgeon; presenting a viewpoint that touches on the triumphs and failures surgeons face every day. The book presents a series of essays that progress from preoperative considerations to the intraoperative experience and finally to the postoperative perspective. I have tried to make it accessible to the nonmedical reader as well as the physician or nurse. There is a glossary of terms that I hope will be helpful and I have tried to explain the medical terms and conditions as plainly as possible.

Surgery, presented from the surgeon's perspective, is something most people, including many non surgical physicians, never get to see or read about. The unexpected twists and turns that a patient can take after even the simplest procedure presents a challenge that mandates constant vigilance by the surgeon and his staff. At the same time, sometimes a surgeon knows, by having just rooted around inside a patient, that everything will be okay. Training, experience, insight, knowledge, and more than a touch of humility combine to create a surgeon.

Each chapter examines a particular aspect of surgery; they are loosely arranged with an introductory section, a section dealing with preoperative considerations, followed by the intraoperative experience and, finally, postoperative considerations. The final section takes a look at the lighter side of surgery and medicine. All the anecdotes and patient scenarios presented are true to my best recollection, but all the names have been changed. I hope these pages will help remove some of the mystery that surrounds the practice of surgery. I hope the reader comes away with new understanding of what it means to be a surgeon and, perhaps, to be a patient.
